Proverbs Chapter 6

We often get ourselves into difficult situations with the choices we make, like Solomon’s son, and it is important that we humble ourselves and ask for help from others and from God.

We are instructed not to be lazy – we often lose interest in our day jobs and in the work we do for God. We do the bare minimum to be “good enough” without it requiring too much of ourselves. Ephesians 6 v7 “Work with enthusiasm as though you were working for the Lord rather than people”.

Solomon talks about adultery again in this chapter. We are reminded that there is no escape from such actions – we must be prepared for the consequences of our sins. V28 “Can a man scoop fire into his lap and not be burned”.

Verse 23 sums up Proverbs – “For these commands and this teaching are a lamp to light the way ahead of you. The correction of discipline is the way to life”.

Proverbs Chapter 5

This is a warning about the adulterous woman, it draws the picture clearly. Speech, that’s smoother than oil! Lips, sweet like honey. This verse is a warning about more than Adultery, it’s simple things like the girl in the front page of the glossy mag, or even young girls ambitions to be the girl in the glossy mag.

All these things seems very exciting, as does the lady described here.

But, these verses are telling us that; That’s a slippery slope. “Her feet go down to death, her steps lead straight to the grave”

God is wanting to impart knowledge and wisdom into his people “my son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge”

God desires for us to seek Him, His wisdom, to live a life honouring to Him, to put Him first! I’m praying that I will hunger after His word, and draw from the spiritual nourishment it offers.

Proverbs Chapter 4

Proverbs 4 v 23-27

Above all else, this is our call in life, this is how we should live to not get distracted on detours that lead to sin, we should be pushing on toward the goal of perfection, although this is not possible surely we can come closer to attaining it by pushing on towards the finish line!

Surely the apostle Paul had this very Proverb in mind when he was writing to the church in Philippi;

13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,[d] but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

So we have entered the race, let’s finish it, persevere, keep the faith, Encourage one another daily in the ways of righteousness and wisdom, we’re in this together!

Proverbs Chapter 3

I asked to write the blog for Proverbs 3 because it was read at my wedding after I had struggled to find a second reading to compliment 1 Corinthians 13 until I read verses 1-12. Although not a traditional wedding reading there could be few more appropriate passages for two people starting out a new life together. Both passages are bookmarked in my bible as a constant reminder that marriage and indeed the Christian life can be summarised as allowing the Lord to direct our paths by acknowledging him in all our ways and to show us the most excellent way: that love never fails.

Proverbs Chapter 2

Verse four of chapter two talks about silver and hidden treasure………what if we really desired wisdom in the same way that we look for these things in life? Money, success and popularity may be some of the things that have become like silver and hidden treasure to you and me……….so…….do we seek wisdom as passionately as we seek these things?

The good news is that God gives wisdom (v6) if we ask for it (v3)……. the rest of this chapter gives practical examples of how wisdom can guide us as we journey through life’s paths.

Let’s ask God for his wisdom today.

Proverbs Chapter 1

“Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public square”.
I love the picture that’s painted in Chapter1: 20-33. The picture is that of wise woman, a mother, pouring out her heart of wisdom to her much-loved children who are on a path of self-destruction. Wisdom calls out to all of us, but often our simple, foolish and selfish lives are too noisy to hear Wisdom. This has challenged me to listen and heed the wisdom that’s calling to my heart; how can we let God’s wisdom guide our lives to a place of safety and peace?

31 Proverbs! Here we go!

On Sunday evening, a whole congregation committed to reading the 31 chapters of Proverbs in the 31 days of March. We read about it, sung about it, preached about it, prayed about it. We’re starting to read the Bible together and not going it alone – why should we – the Christian faith thrives in community.

A big “shout out” must go to the 31+ people who have volunteered to contribute to this daily blog! We hope you are blessed as you prepare, think and share and I know that we will all be blessed greatly by what we can learn together.

As for the rest of us, we can share our thoughts in the comment field each day to encourage, share, discuss and learn.

Isn’t it exciting?
